Passion, research and innovation are the same characteristics of those who, every day, stay close and support women affected by ovarian cancer.
The non-profit association Loto was born in 2013 with the aim of informing and creating awareness and knowledge of ovarian cancer, one of the most common and severe female cancers of which the causes are not yet known and for which they are not early detection tools still available. The important awareness, information and support activities of cancer patients carried out by the Loto association are based on the voluntary work of the members, structured into specific working groups according to the professionalism and willingness of the volunteers.
The Loto association is based and operates in Bologna with two operating points, one of which is inside the Policlinico Sant’Orsola-Malpighi, at the Addarii Oncological Institute where the Technical-Scientific Committee works.
Ovarian cancer, also called Silent Killer, is absolutely the gynecological tumor with the highest mortality rate that most often affects women over the age of 50, but it can also affect younger women. It does not show particular symptoms in the early phase and this is the reason why in 75-80% of cases the diagnosis of ovarian cancer reaches the advanced stage of the disease, when the carcinoma is now extensive and can cause evident symptoms such as an increase in the volume of the abdomen, sense of abdominal tension, difficulty in evacuation, pelvic and abdominal pain and the need to urinate frequently. Recognizing these symptoms and promptly reporting them to the doctor is certainly the most important action that can anticipate the diagnosis and treatment of ovarian cancer.
The activities organized by the Loto association are mainly and directly aimed at women affected by ovarian cancer and their families to help them face and overcome the disease with courage, optimism and determination and, at the same time, to the scientific and civil community to promote, awareness and inform.
Fighting against ovarian cancer means preventing and giving the possibility to recognize and diagnose carcinoma in time: for this reason the Loto association organizes events, workshops, conferences and, through the website and information campaigns, sensitizes and stimulates early diagnosis processes of ovarian cancer.
The fight against cancer is fought in medical and scientific research laboratories that need to be supported, financed and disseminated. The Technical-Scientific Committee of the Loto association organizes scientific and awareness meetings, selecting and proposing new research projects.
The sensitivity and attention to the field of female pathology, the continuous research and the passion of volunteering are strong points of convergence between the association Loto and So.Di.Co which, since 2016 has promoted an important fundraising and awareness of ovarian cancer to support the association’s activities.
